My photo
Half pictures, half words. I'm living in Chicago for the semester and want to document what happens. I'm a junior in college, art major, relentless dabbler.

It's been so long, oops!! We've been to a lot of shows for arts sem. We saw Peter Pan at the Looking Glass Theater which was amazing! Then Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind...this is becoming a tradition for me, I think. I'm joining the crazies that go every month, it was so great! The amount you pay to get in depends on what you roll on a die. The show is comprised of 60 plays in 60 minutes. Some are serious, some are funny..it's just fantastic. Also fantastic is my ingenious discovery of how to stand playing cards up without knowing how..(purposefully vague so you won't steal my idea). Anyway that is what I will be doing all afternoon for a stop-motion assignment. Playing cards.

Honest to Blog

Happy November!
I think the best way to get down what has happened this week is to just list list list.

Critical Mass-last Friday of every month. Imagine you're on a nice leisurely ride. Now surround yourself with hundreds of costume clad riders yelling "happy Friday," then put yourself in the middle of downtown Chicago, stopping traffic wherever the ride may go. This is someone riding in a banana suit. And me.

Halloween-Please do not try to wear a lamp. I can tell you that it is no fun and rather dangerous. That is the last time I will try to be the leg lamp from A Christmas Story ever again!

SOFA TONIGHT! compliments my boss's parents' insurance company or something! Words cannot describe. Lets eat some free food and look at cool stuff.

Happy Halloween!

Best costume/vintage shops ever off the belmont red line stop. Where else could you find a 2-piece outfit made of glittery plastic? Nowhere, that's where. Perfect mix of the traditional stupid packaged costumes that are fun to look and absolutely crazy clothes that make being anything on Halloween possible.
I'm still trying to find a lampshade for my costume..I'm being the lamp lamp from A Christmas Story. I may have to commandeer the lamp in my room as a last resort.

Circus class at the Actor's Gynmasium, I finally got my leg up..and stuck up.
Trip to Threadless offices. So many shirts!

Ouch.

How is it that I manage to avoid burning myself all day long in a hot glass shop, then burn my hand on the oven making pizza at home? 2300 degree liquid glass? No problem..but 400 degree itty bitty oven, WATCH OUT folks!!!

weekend is almost over.

I thought about writing a eulogy for this weekend because it was that good. It's sunday night, now. Kaitlyn, Leigh, and I are watching really cool stuff on youtube. It's just one of those really good nights. It's raining outside and it's the kind of rain that is so gooooood to listen to. sooo gooooood. Leigh and I went on a fantastic bike ride all the way up to Loyola today. Turns out, the lakefront bike path does not go all the way up..we thought it did, and it was pretty sad when it ended. All in all it was a good day.
Also, I ate Indian leftovers and honeycrisp apples.

hella postmodern.

My blog is getting outa OZ!

This past Sunday our core course visited Trinity church. This is the church that the Obamas belonged to in Chicago before all that jazz happened. (watched All That Jazz last night..so good..must.find.leotard). I must admit, I went into church thinking I was just an observer, I would listen politely, try and not be awkward. I ended up taking away so much more than just observations. Anyway, it was freaking amazing. Wait.. church...amazing? Yes. This was just beyond belief. Trinity is known for being very outspoken and did they ever speak out!!! The choir was amazing, everyone who spoke was amazing...AMAZING is the only word to describe it.
The sermon was about "getting out of oz" Dorothy style a la Wizard of Oz...surrounding yourself with good people and making your life what you want it to be; no excuses. What a relevant message from somewhere/one I didn't expect to relate to. He spoke to the broad human experiences that we all share as well as specific to the Chicago African American community.
SO with that in mind, I'm getting my blog out of Oz. New format! New background! An actual post! Blog, from now on I promise to update you regularly and give you the attention you deserve.
p.s. Going to Threadless tomorrow w/ the business group, AIC tomorrow night, the ballet on Friday! Best combo ever?

Miller Girl in the Moon.jpg

HA!

circus continued... WOAH. Just googled some tricks to go over what I learned today. One of the ones I remembered from class is called the "girl in the moon." You do in on the hoop. Instead of the trick coming up on google, beer came up! I guess Miller High Life has/had a logo of the "girl in the moon" which looks vaguely similar to the aerial arts move.. Her slogan/line is, "I'm the girl in the moon, and I want to tell you everything I know."
NOW what I really want to know is which "girl in the moon" came first? The eternal question! Can it ever be answered? Are circus folk inspired by a cheap beer's nostalgic logo? Were the brewers closet circus fanatics? More research will be conducted.
Circus class today...hanging on large metal hoops in the air hurts! I still don't get how people make it look so effortless and painless!!! Gotta work on that..I think I'll be sore until class next week!

This week in my life..

This week's classes were really great. We started off Monday with a poetry workshop with a real life poet, cin Salach. It was the most nurturing poetry experience I have ever had. I should note that all previous experience spanned traumatic middle school haikus, this was much, much better. It was actually fun! I am a visually creative as apposed to words creative person for the most part and this exercise was great for getting me out of my comfort zone in terms of expressing myself.
Wednesday was improv day. We went to IO (Improv Olympics) for their 11 o'clock show and it was hi-lar-i-ous. We are still cracking jokes about it. IO is in Wrigleyville in this great little intimate space where you can hear everyone's laughs separately all at once. I can't even imagine how fast their brains function to be able to have an entire conversation (a funny one) from no prompts, script, anything. So So mind blowing when you stop laughing for a second and think about it.
Tonight I'm going to an Irish punk show..we'll see how it goes because I have no clue what it'll be like! I'm excited!
Here are some pictures from the week..

Something really amazing just happened to me. A few minutes ago I did laundry, came back to my room, got my drying rack out from under my bed, set it up, and expanded it. For the first time, my drying rack is able to reach its full wing-span, stretch all the way out in both directions of its stretchability, and still fit very comfortable in my room. There is probably room for three shirts across each bar; I never knew it had such potential. Finally, there is space to hang dry my un-dryable clothes..albeit the space has not yet magically grown from it's one-room studio size, it's still big enough to do laundry in.

2 weeks.

I've been here for two weeks and it is craaaaazy. I have been so busy I have meant to write every single day because we have done something fun every single day. On Monday for class, we had an improv workshop and it was so hilarious I almost peed my pants like 75 times. Thats all for now because I need to go to the fancy gym down the street where I have a free two-week trial membership and take some kind of dance/aerobics class..not Zumba, some other one I've never heard of..more exotic.

Today I went to Target.

You know the story..if you have ever needed just one thing, oh let's say lotion, you think to yourself, "I'll just run out to target quick." Well that's exactly what I said today, and exactly what did not happen. I'm pretty sure that I almost bought one of EVERYTHING in there. I say almost because after two hours of flashback TV gameshow mad-dash run around the store dumping everything in my cart shopping I had to quit. It was lunchtime and I was hungry.
So! That little excursion got me super pumped for Chicago!! Let's go now.

Love this book!

books_unappealing.jpg This book is hilarious. I've read a lot of Chelsea Handler lately and I keep getting confused and think i'm reading her while I'm reading this! So so so genuinely funny and honest. Makes me think I can write a book about my mistakes...

Check out this cool fish thing! HIGH TECH!!

First Post!

Finally! I have conquered the internet! Maybe not quite "conquered", but I made a blog (big step). This blog will be recording my misadventures and musings over the next few months: music, art, stupid internet stuff...who knows. I am about to move to downtown Chicago where I will attempt to perform the daring feat of living in a REAL apartment and simultaneously learning to feed myself, intern, and take classes. All. At. Once. Until then, I am biding my time in Sioux City, Iowa...
